Irri

Irri is a Dothraki handmaid gifted to Daenerys Targaryen by her brother Viserys at her wedding to Khal Drogo. Along with Jhiqui and Doreah, she is one of three handmaids selected to serve the new khaleesi. Irri's primary role is to teach Daenerys the Dothraki tongue and the ways of riding in the Dothraki fashion, a task that proves essential to Daenerys's survival and integration into the khalasar. She is described as having copper skin, black hair, and almond-shaped eyes, typical of the Dothraki people, and she speaks the Common Tongue only haltingly, often relying on her native language.

Cultural Intermediary and Witness

Irri serves as a crucial cultural intermediary for Daenerys, explaining Dothraki customs and beliefs. She corrects Daenerys's Dothraki phrases, informs her of the dosh khaleen's prophecies, and recounts the legends of her people, such as the belief that dragons are evil beasts killed by brave men. She is present at the naming ceremony where Daenerys eats the stallion's heart, and she translates the words of the crones. Irri also witnesses Daenerys's growing power and independence, from her defiance of Viserys to her command over the khalasar's warriors. When Daenerys claims the lamb girl Eroeh as her own, Irri echoes the Dothraki consensus that the girl is "nothing," revealing the cultural gap between her and her mistress, yet she ultimately obeys Daenerys's commands.

Loyalty and Survival

Irri's loyalty is tested during the chaos following Khal Drogo's wound and the subsequent blood magic. When Daenerys falls into a fevered sleep, Irri is among those who remain, helping to nurse her back to health. After the khalasar scatters, Irri stays with Daenerys, one of the few who do not abandon her. She is present when Daenerys emerges from the funeral pyre with three newborn dragons, and she is among the first to kneel before her as the new queen. Irri's steadfastness, though often expressed through simple acts of service, marks her as a key figure in Daenerys's inner circle, a witness to the birth of a new Targaryen dynasty.
